The Most Common Desert Gardening Question

How much should I water my shrubs and trees?
The answer may surprise you!

This is the most frequently asked question we get at the nursery, especially when things start to heat up for the summer.

There answer is that there is no single correct answer to water your plants in the landscape.
Several factors have to be accounted for in order to determine the correct frequency, duration and volume of water.

Factors such as:
  • Soil Type
  • Location
  • Plant Types
  • Plant Age or Maturity

These can all affect how you water.
We understand that this can be overwhelming and while it does take some time and dedication to reach the right schedule, we hope that you'll use this guide as a jumping-off point:

Trees and Shrubs need to be watered
Deep and Infrequently

Trees and shrubs have extensive root systems and it takes a bit longer for water to reach a larger root zone. At the same time, that larger and deeper root zone will take longer to dry out than a shallower root zone.

Watering deep does take more time, but that's where a drip system comes into play.
Drip systems are made to give a little bit of water over a long period of time; making it easy for you to keep to a schedule and more efficient than standing by your tree with a hose.
